The hills are alive. *The Sound of Music* saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy and turned Salzburg into a global pilgrimage site.

The Steps

Mirabell Gardens. 🌷

This is where Maria and the children sang "Do-Re-Mi." It is a Baroque masterpiece of geometry, statues, and flowers.

The Pegasus

The fountain the children danced around. It is located near the grand staircase. Be warned: it is smaller than it looks in the movie.

The Gnomes

Don't miss the "Dwarf Garden" (Zwergerlgarten). These strange, 300-year-old marble statues of dwarves were also featured in the song.

The Terrace

Schloss Leopoldskron. 🦢

This palace served as the backyard of the Von Trapp villa (the front was a different house). This is where they fell into the lake.

Private Property

It is now a private hotel. You cannot enter the grounds unless you are a guest. However, the view across the lake is public and perfect.

The Lake

The boat scene was filmed here. The water was apparently filthy during filming, which made the actors very unhappy about falling in.

Max Reinhardt

Before the movie, this was the home of Max Reinhardt, the founder of the Salzburg Festival. It has always been a house of theater.

The Glass Gazebo. 💏

Originally at Leopoldskron, the gazebo was moved to Hellbrunn Palace to make it accessible to fans. It is the site of the movie's romantic scenes.

Why is it Locked?

You can look, but you can't go in. The city locked the doors after too many tourists broke their ankles trying to jump from bench to bench like Liesl.

The Real Maria

Nonnberg Abbey. ⛪

This is where the real Maria Kutschera was a novice. It is the oldest female convent in the German-speaking world.

The Gate

You cannot enter the convent itself (the nuns are cloistered), but you can visit the Gothic church and the gate where the children came to beg Maria to come back.

6:45 AM

If you wake up early, you can hear the nuns singing Gregorian chants in the church at 6:45 AM. It is haunting, beautiful, and absolutely authentic.
